Discussion » Building e- capability e-Champion Gippsland Region
Distance and isolation in Gippsland make delivering training in these remote areas, very time consuming and expensive for both student, trainer and organisation.
The need for e-learning capability is essential as distance often makes it hard for adult learners to access Ace.

Gippsland Region e-Leaders website
The need to embed an e-learning culture in the region will make training more accessable and bring the world to the classroom no matter how remote.
To accomplish this over such a large area a number of strategies have been implemented with a group of training organisations in the region. My aim is with the help of my e-mentors and fellow e-champions is to encourage organisations to develop.

  1. Design and delivery of e-learning
  2. Develop learning materials using focus tools
  3. Strategic capability in developing e for the wider community
Action Steps.
  1. Communicate and introduce myself by email.
  2. Create a Vroom that all e-leaders and travelers can join in to answer and brainstorm any questions and e-ideas.
  3. Send out Reality Checks for an overview of e-learning / e-business in-house,
  4. Create a Action Plan site for all organisations on the e-mentor wiki to create a manageable plan of action,
  5. Conduct face to face workshop at organistaions with the guidance of my e-mentor
  6. Develop a group on the AceNetwork for the Gippsland Region to access the skill and knowledge offered
  7. Develop a community website information portal for developing focus tools for organisations in Gippsland Region
  8. Brainstorm and help develop organisations e-ideas
  9. Track results
E-champion report.
The first task was to develop a reality check that established how the organisations would be equipped for e-learning.
It asked questions about the equipment and skill that was already available.
Once we had established this information the e-leaders developed their action plans.
To help develop their action plans. I set up a Vroom at learn central this gave all e-leaders the oppurtunity to get the assisstance any time they needed assistance. This Vroom became importantant and all e-leaders attended for guidence and instruction.
To also help the e-leaders become involved further they were asked to join the Acenetwork Ning to be exposed to e-learning colleagues.
All organisations actioned their e-ideas successfully and within the due dates. Many new organisations became involved and are now intrested in this project. All e-leaders were offered to join in a series of workshops conducted by the e-champions that showed the preffered focus tools. The attendance of the Gippsland Region was excellent and the enthusiasm demonstrated in the fact that all actioned their e-ideas.
The Gippsland Region spruz was instramental in keeping the e-leaders up to date with extended tutorials and many found it very useful as a Personal Learning Network. I have had requests to keep this site going and have bought it for 12 monthds to keep intrest.

  • Action Plan is to learn ways around online sites with a view to introduce other volunteers from our place to see how it all goes & what issues come up.
E-Learning Project November Report
Original Idea
  • For beginner computer class to skill build their IT skills through social interaction online utilising tools available on the web. I saw this as a way of identifying the problems we may face in starting to implement limited online learning from our Centre.
  • This idea rapidly changed when I started online activities! The range of tools and time required to work through them, as a beginner in this way of communicating, made the timelines and implementation of the first idea unachievable in the time and money budgeted for the project.
Implementation of revised idea
  • The idea has evolved into staff communication through a blog site on a new website we are currently developing. This website has the capacity for community groups to add and edit their own pages and is very easy for a novice like myself and other staff to manage and add/delete content.
  • The staff blog page is password protected and only for staff – this will enable management to have a secure running dialogue re current work priorities etc thus overcoming one of the current difficulties in communication as we do not generally have overlapping work times . It will also get the staff into the habit of logging into the website first up and increase their familiarity with using this tool. Next step is to add page for volunteers and COM and then(hopefully January 2011) will replace our current website to be our online presence with links to other relevant sites and encourage local groups to add their page.
Potential development
  • Through this experience we want to further research the possibilities of developing online learner section components utilising similar tools. This could open up a range of course options for small groups through CDCC partnerships with online tutors in other locations.
  • It could also provide the potential/encouragement for greater resource sharing of ideas, planning, courses, tutors, etc. across our sub regional area.
Related challenges
  • IT equipment maintenance - would need a competent IT person to regularly maintain and update equipment and systems to ensure functioning efficiently for organization and clients.
  • Ongoing research and evaluation of tools and equipment that could improve online course. delivery
  • Finding suitable tutors or partners to deliver quality courses to our students.
Corinella actioned our e-idea in collaboration with PICAL staff and volunteers were shown how to use elluminate in a workshop and also shown how wiki was a valuable tool. Corinalla are on the way to building sustanable e-capability.

  • Intention is to introduce staff and volunteers to all things "E" by use of wiki to communicate day to day activities and elluminate to see what is possible with a little bit of technology.
  • Create a simple wiki that incorporates a number of common activities/communcations of the organisation
  • Provide staff with access to wiki and enlist their assistance with the posting of information, work with small groups of volunteers to introduce to wiki,
  • Use elluminate to communicate inhouse and potentially with another group (Corinella Community Centre).
PICAL actioned e-idea in collaboration with Corinella tutors staff and Volunteers were shown the use of elluminate and how the wiki that was set up for the organisation will be used.

Facebook for the elderly
  • To be able to develope a site on Facebook for community Benambra Camera Click Clack Club
  • This will enable community members to access the NHouse for the how to part of it all, thus creating a new learning environment while developing skills about social networking and face book.
  • It will give the clients a sense of pride in being able to learn IT skills about social Networking and what you can acheive by learning at an older age.
  • It would be hoped in the future to have a Photographer conduct a course in in elluminate to give the clients some good ideas on the more detailed approaches to usage of the cameras.
  • * To join a site called red bubble to sell the photos the client has created, making it possible for them to enhance their incomes.
  • * To help clients understand copyright and privacy rules and help them get over the fear of using the internet
  • To develop a safe comfortable online space for all.
Benambra Actioned their e-idea and set up a face book group for the community all participants have been introduced to facebook. Photographs are already being sold on Reb Bubble.
The community is now aware of how the use of technology can benefit the elderly and improve communication while being isolated

I was approached by a participant in the Certificate IV for Training and Assessment regarding the possibility of completing the qualification on-line.
The participant has been travelling an hour to attend face-to-face classes. As a result, the following action plan was developed.
  • Before I approached the client, I took my proposal to the Program Manager for approval.
  • The program will be run in conjunction with the current face-to-face course.
  • I have spent time explaining the proposal to the client and have provided an induction to an elluminate class.
At this point, all parties are happy to go ahead with the plan. It will be used as a trial for a possible option for future training for remote learners
I see e-learning as opportunity; opportunity for meeting the needs of all, for making connections with others, for building online communities, for sharing, for engaging, for extending the class room beyond the local community to the world wide community.
All this can be achieved through the use of open source tools and this means learning is accessible to all who can access the internet. There are tools which support people with disabilities, tools for planning and organising, for collaboration and for fun and creativity. There are Learning Management Systems to support online delivery of training and tools to build e-portfolios.
The potential exists to develop training and assessment strategies which can be adapted to suit the needs of everyone.

  • Development of an online class for EGNNH
Lakes Entrance actioned an elluminate session for the East Gippsland Network Neighbourhood House and invited her network to become involved in this e-learning e-mentor project
Thanks to the online sessions and Junitas assistance it means I can now keep up with lots of interesting free online training and exposure to free software downloads. These can be used easily by tutors and students with very low IT skills, making using the computer not just word docs.
Some of the fun aspects for a group of adults with low literacy and a mild disability can have allot of fun putting to gether photos and speech in a voice thread, something I knew nothing about until a few weeks ago.
That's what my job is all about keeping people in the loop and giving them the opportunity to gain news skills and keep up with the ever changing IT world, particularly those in the disadvantaged and lower socioeconomic group.
